So I've been seriously considering getting an ECU and TCU tune on my 2018 S4 for a while now, but I keep going back and forth because I'm genuinely worried about whether the ZF 8-speed transmission can handle the extra power and torque over the long term. I know the ZF units are pretty robust and people have been tuning these cars for years without major issues, but I've also read some horror stories about torque converter failures and clutch pack wear on tuned cars, especially when you start pushing over 500 Nm of torque. The car is my daily driver so reliability is really important to me, and I don't want to end up with a car that's faster but spends more time in the shop than on the road. I've been doing a lot of research on this and I found a site called auditransmissionrepair.ae/ that has some technical articles about what these transmissions can handle, and it seems like the general consensus is that the ZF 8-speed is actually quite over-engineered and can handle a decent amount of extra power as long as you don't go crazy with launches and you keep up with maintenance. I'm thinking about going for a stage 1 tune that would take it to about 450 horsepower and 550 Nm of torque, which seems like a reasonable bump without pushing the limits too far. I guess I'm just looking for some reassurance from people who've actually tuned their S4 or similar Audi with the ZF 8-speed and can tell me about their long-term experience with reliability. Did you have any transmission issues after tuning, and did you do anything proactively to strengthen the gearbox? I'd really appreciate some honest feedback from people who've been there before I pull the trigger on this.
